Undergraduate Program

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers BA and BS undergraduate degrees in chemistry and biochemistry concentrations. Our BS degrees lead to ACS certification. UC is a highly-ranked research institution, and many of our undergraduates are involved in ground-breaking research with our faculty and graduate students.

Mary Anne Refaei (expected '09 BS in Biochemistry)
I have been doing research on proteins in Dr. Tsang’s lab since I was a sophomore. I think the undergraduate research program at UC was extremely helpful to me. It helped me realize that there is much more to the field of chemistry than what you learn in class. Based upon research done in Dr. Tsang’s lab here at UC, I got the chance to travel to Germany to participate in an international research program (the DAAD RISE), which has been an excellent way to gain scientific experience in an international context. My plans after UC include going to graduate school, where I hope to focus on spectroscopic techniques in biochemistry. My current research project in Dr. Tsang’s lab involves working with bacterial enzymes and their applications to novel protein NMR methods. In Germany, I work with homing endonucleases, which are enzymes of interest to people who work on gene therapy. I would like to ultimately apply the knowledge I gain to a career in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry. I think that research can be a fantastic experience for anyone starting out in chemistry because you are given lots of practical knowledge in an academic setting. |
