Oesper Professor of Chemical Education and History of Chemistry Professor, Chemistry
PhD, University of Wisconsin |
Biography William B. Jensen (b. 1948) received his B.S. degree (1970) in chemistry with honors, his M.S degree (1972) in chemistry and education, and his Ph. D degree (1982) in inorganic chemistry all from the University of Wisconsin-Madison - the latter for work done under the supervision of Edwin Larsen on the preparation of reduced-state zirconium and hafnium compounds in molten aluminum halide melts. After briefly serving as an instructor at Wisconsin, he was appointed in 1983 as an Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Since 1987 he has served as the Oesper Professor of Chemical Education and History of Chemistry at the University Cincinnati, where he also acts as curator of the Oesper Collections in the History of Chemistry, which house a rare book and journal collection (over 15,000 items), a print and portrait collection (over 3000 items) and a museum of antique chemical apparatus (over 6000 items). The author of over 170 papers, reviews and books in the fields of inorganic chemistry, chemical education, and history of chemistry, Dr. Jensen is also a Past Chair of the ACS Division of the History of Chemistry, the founding editor of the Bulletin for the History of Chemistry, and recipient of the Division’s 2005 Edelstein Award for Outstanding Achievement in the History of Chemistry.
Research Areas: Chemical Education, Inorganic Chemistry and History of Chemistry
Chemical Education, Inorganic Chemistry: Dr. Jensen’s work in chemical education and inorganic chemistry deals largely with advanced uses of the periodic table and the development of empirical sorting maps, such as bond-type diagrams, to better organize and teach the facts of descriptive inorganic chemistry at both the introductory and advanced levels. He has also done work on the Lewis acid-base concepts.
History of Chemistry: In the area of history of chemistry, Dr. Jensen’s interests have centered primarily on the history of late 19th- and early 20th-century physical and inorganic chemistry and on the history and development of chemical apparatus.
