Jonathan Breiner

Jon Breiner Associate Professor, Chemistry
Associate Professor, College of Education, Criminal Justice &
Human Services

PhD, University of Cincinnati, 1996

Biography

Jon Breiner received his PhD in chemistry in 1996 from the University of Cincinnati (UC) for work with Dr. James Mark on the structure-property relationships of silica-siloxane molecular composites. Jon has worked at UC since 1995 first as an Adjunct Instructor/Professor, Visiting Professor, and in 1999 was hired as an Assistant Professor in University College. In University College, Jon developed a chemistry curriculum for at-risk students, and began research related to classroom instruction and the First Year Experience (FYE). Upon dissolution of University College in 2003, Jon received a joint appointment to the Division of Teacher Education in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH) and to the Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S). His duties in CECH include science education research, K-12 outreach programs, and collaborations on FYE programs and new curricula. His primary duty for A&S is teaching freshman general chemistry.

Research Areas

Science Education

Holding a joint appointment with the Division of Teacher Education and the Department of Chemistry, Jon is most interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning. His recent, current and future activities include:
  • Research in the use of instructional technology in the classroom. One current study involves the Personal Response System (PRS or ?clicker?) and its impact in terms of learning in a freshman chemistry lecture with a large population of at-risk students. Studies show that combining the clicker with ?peer instruction? allows a higher level of learning/competence (i.e. ? levels 5 and 6 on the Bloom scale) and this study will look at the effect of peer instruction versus the use of the clicker.
  • Science Teacher Professional Development programs. Working with the Ohio Higher Education Network and the Southwest Ohio Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science to create, manage, and study professional development programs for (mostly) science teachers at the middle school level. Currently we are developing a forensic science module based on the state of Ohio academic content standards.
  • Creation of curricula. Jon is further developing a curriculum for at-risk students in introductory chemistry. The focus is to add more inquiry activities and increase the amount of peer instruction. Also Jon is creating an inquiry-based chemistry curriculum for pre-service (K-8) teachers.
