Research interests:
Analytical Chemistry with special interest in development of instruments,
methods and problem-orientated procedures based on the use of plasma sources
(inductively coupled plasma, glow discharge) for elemental mass spectrometry
of solid and liquid samples. Development of procedures for speciation
(As, Se, Cr, Ni, Pt, Pd, Rh) based on on-line coupling of ICP-MS with
adequate separation techniques.

Instrumental Developments for analytical atomic spectroscopy.

Since the early days of Bunsen and Kirchhoff atomic spectroscopy has
developed to one of the most important tools for analytical chemistry,
and even about 150 years later there is still a need to improve instrumentation.
In this lecture some instrumental developments from the Institute for
Analytical Sciences (ISAS) will be discussed, which had already led to
new commercially available instruments in absorption, emission and mass
spectrometry.
The topics covered will include
" Development of continuum source spectroscopy for multielement analysis
in atomic absorption spectrometry.
" Development of high mass resolution in inductively coupled plasma
mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to overcome limitations from spectral interferences.
" Development of a new "time of flight (TOF)" mass spectrometer
for acquisition of transient signals.
" Development of a new glow discharge mass spectrometer (GD-MS) for
direct analysis of conducting and non-conducting samples.
At hand of selected examples it will be shown that these instruments extend
the application range of atomic spectroscopy in particular in the material
and life sciences. Finally, trends will be discussed how future instrumentation
may become cheaper and more powerful by making use of miniaturisation
strategies which can lead to "lab on a chip" systems with sample
treatment, separation and detection integrated in one device.
