About the Speakers

Dr. Ron Jandacek received a B.A. in chemistry from Rice University in 1964, and a Ph. D. in physical chemistry from the University of Texas in Austin in 1968. He joined Procter & Gamble in 1968, and after 3 months left for 2 years in the Army, where he worked of crystal structures of radioprotectant drugs at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In 1970, he returned to P&G and continued with single crystal studies. In 1972, working with Fred Mattson, he began to make a transition into the arena of lipid chemistry. This focus has included studies of the physical properties of lipids, absorption of lipids from the intestine, cholesterol metabolism, and olestra. As a Principal Scientist at P&G Miami Valley Laboratories, he continues work in areas related to the chemistry and biochemistry of lipids. He has been a member of the ACS for more than 25 years and is also a member of the American Institute of Nutrition, and the American Oil Chemists' Society. He is the author of 40 publications and 3 book chapters, and is listed as inventor on 9 patents in the area of fats and oils.

Ron Keas is a Lab Associate in the Fundamental Catalyst Research Group at Quantum Chemical Company. He has been with the company 7 years. Prior to moving to Cincinnati, he worked 9 years as Senior Technician at PPG and 15 years at the 3M Company. In his spare time, Ron is a classical violinist, a gardener, and a breeder and trainer of Weimaraners.

Dr. Mordecai Treblow earned his Ph. D. in chemistry for the University of Pittsburgh. After a career in teaching and industry, he retired from Mead Corporation, Imaging Division, He now exercises his love of his profession by service to the ACS. He served three terms on the ACS Council. He is currently the Director of ACS Region II.

Dr. Jianmin Bao received his B. S. in Organic Chemistry in 1983 and his M. S. in 1986 from Shandong University, Jinan, China. He earned his Ph. D. in Analytical Chemistry from Purdue University in 1993 under the direction of Fred E. Regnier. He is currently employed at Procter & Gamble.

Dr. Karthik A. Iyer received his Integrated Master degree from IIT Kanpur in 1987. He received his doctorate degree from Ohio State University in 1993 under the direction of Prof. Sherwin Singer. Dr Iyer's Ph.D. research focussed on understanding the relationship between zeolite structure and its vibrational spectra. Since then he have been a post doctoral researcher at the University of Cincinnati with Prof. Thomas Beck. They have concentrated on developing methods to perform electronic structure calculations on hundreds of atoms.

Dr. Elius I. Franses joined the faculty of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University in 1979. He leads an active research program in the study of surfactants and interfacial phenomena and is a co-editor of Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects. Prof. Franses is a graduate (B.S.) of the National Technical University of Athens, Greece and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D.).
