Undergraduate Program

ANNOUNCEMENT: We invite high school science teachers to recommend students for participation in ACS Project SEED during the summer of 2005. Deadline: February 14, 2005. Please see Student Eligibility and Teacher Recommendations & Student Selection sections.

All interested mentors must contact the program coordinator (Bill Connick, bill.connick@uc.edu) by January 14, 2005.

Overview
This American Chemical Society (ACS) sponsored program places economically disadvantaged high school students in academic, industrial, and governmental research laboratories for eight-to-ten weeks during the summer. For 36 years, Project SEED has helped high school students expand their career outlook and provide opportunities for students who historically lack exposure to scientific careers.

The Program
Each participating high school student will engage in research in an academic or industrial chemical laboratory. The students will be exposed to laboratory techniques, including maintaining records, communicating results and keeping a laboratory notebook. The mentor also will provide students with college and career counseling. Social events, field trips, and a presentation of the students' work at the end of the summer are also tentatively planned throughout the summer. The program will involve at least 8 weeks of participation at approximately 40 hours per week.

At the conclusion of the summer, each student will prepare a brief report on his/her work for submission to the ACS, and the mentor will cosign this report. Each student and each mentor will complete a follow-up survey to be used for assessment and improvement of the program. Upon receipt of the report and survey from the student, the final portion ($200) of the fellowship award will be disbursed to the student.
