| When
the ACA holds its next annual convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, the ACA
organizations of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, our tri-state, will be
your actual hosts. To honor
each of these states, the Logo Committee has selected one symbol from
each state to represent their members. For Ohio, the choice was determined by the host organization, Cincinnati. This town on the river was given the nickname "Porkopolis" in 1818, when Elisha Mills opened its first slaughterhouse, packing pork in brine-filled barrels. The nickname stuck through the 1800's, as Cincinnati replaced Buffalo, NY, as the meat-packing center of the U.S. More recently, the pig (this time with wings!) can be seen as the whimsical flying pig symbol of the Sawyer Point Park, our outdoor recreation area along the Ohio River. Indiana's designation is the Cardinal, its state bird. The cardinal is known for its loyalty (they do not migrate, calling only one place home), and for its loud and clear song of Spring -- the first heard in that season. It also doesn't hurt that the cardinal is red -- one of IU and its famous basketball team's colors. Finally, Kentucky is represented by the horse. 95% of all thoroughbreds live within a 50 mile radius of Lexington, Kentucky. Additionally, the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington is a living memorial to all the great race horses, while Louisville is the home of the famous Kentucky Derby. |
